The American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA), headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina, is the premier medical specialty certifying board for anesthesiologists in the United States. Founded in 1938, the organisation is responsible for administering initial certification and maintenance of certification programmes to uphold the highest standards of anesthesiology practice.
The ABA offers a suite of digital assessment and credentialing products. These include initial certification assessments comprising the BASIC, ADVANCED, and APPLIED exams, as well as eight subspecialty certification programmes covering areas such as adult cardiac anesthesiology, critical care medicine, pain medicine, pediatric anesthesiology, and hospice and palliative medicine. Its Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology (MOCA) programme supports lifelong learning and ongoing professional development for practicing physicians.
The organisation has certified over 69,000 anesthesiologists across the United States. Its work spans the healthcare, medical education, and physician certification sectors, with a focus on ensuring patients receive the best possible care through rigorous credentialing standards.
