Arcadis is a design, engineering and consultancy firm working on natural and built assets, with a particular focus on sustainability. The company was founded in 1888 as a land reclamation business in the Netherlands and now employs more than 36,000 people across over 30 countries. In 2024 it reported gross revenues of €5bn and supported more than 40,000 client projects. Its technical work spans environment, energy, water, buildings, transport and infrastructure, alongside resilience and risk reduction and ESG risk management.
The firm is organised around four global business areas. Places delivers projects related to buildings and urban environments; Mobility covers transport and infrastructure, including metro systems in Sydney and Toronto. Resilience addresses risks such as flooding and water security - clean drinking water has been secured across more than 30 U.S. states and flood risk reduced in the Netherlands. Intelligence develops intelligent products and data-driven solutions applied across assets, and is the area most directly concerned with software, analytics and digital delivery.
Arcadis has grown through strategic acquisitions over more than 135 years of operation and describes itself as bringing together multidisciplinary teams from around the world. It states that it has helped more than a third of the world's communities become more resilient. On external ESG assessments, the company ranks in the top 2% of its sector under Sustainalytics' ESG Risk Rating and in the top 2% of firms assessed by EcoVadis for integration of sustainable practices. Recent projects include work on the Paris Olympics.
