Basecamp Research is an AI company working in life sciences, founded in 2019 and headquartered in London with a hub in Boston. The firm builds AI systems trained on biological data collected beyond the boundaries of known biology, and applies them to the design of proteins, enzymes and biological systems for therapeutic use, including treatments for rare and genetic diseases. It has raised $85 million in funding.
Its work rests on two products. BaseData is described as the world's largest and fastest-growing biological dataset, containing more than 10 billion novel genetic sequences and expanding the known tree of life tenfold. More than half of the early dataset came from previously unknown life forms. The dataset is assembled through a global data supply chain of 152 partner organisations across 28 countries, using portable labs for off-grid DNA sequencing in remote and extreme environments; the company began with an Arctic expedition to discover new species and genes. EDEN is an AI foundation model trained on this data - a large language model in which the language is DNA - used to generate novel proteins, enzymes and biological systems.
Technical work spans AI foundation models, genomics and DNA sequencing, protein engineering and design, computational biology, large language models applied to DNA, and the collection and curation of biological data. The company collaborates with NVIDIA, Anthropic's Claude and major biopharma firms, and was named among Fast Company's Top 10 Most Innovative Companies in Biotech.
