EWI is an independent, nonprofit engineering and applied research and development organization founded in 1984 as the Edison Welding Institute. It works with manufacturers to identify practical technical solutions, develop them through scientific research, and implement them in production. Teams typically operate as an extension of a client's innovation, engineering, and manufacturing groups, supporting projects from initial technical assessment through process development, validation, implementation and production support.
Its technical work spans welding and joining, additive manufacturing, advanced automation, nondestructive evaluation and inspection, materials engineering and integrity, data science and laboratory testing. Engineers and researchers apply these disciplines across industries including automotive, aerospace, defense and government, electronics, energy, medical devices, packaging and heavy manufacturing.
Two programmes anchor the organisation's work. The Cooperative Research Program is a membership scheme through which member companies help guide research priorities and gain access to EWI's technical expertise, laboratory resources and engineers. Buffalo Manufacturing Works is a facility where EWI engineers develop and deploy technologies for advanced manufacturing clients.
EWI is headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, with Buffalo Manufacturing Works located in Buffalo, New York. The organisation operates across the United States.
