gematik is Germany's National Agency for Digital Medicine (Nationale Agentur für Digitale Medizin) and holds overall responsibility for the Telematikinfrastruktur, the digital backbone of the German health-care system. The agency develops central digital applications and security foundations for the secure exchange of health data across the sector, working with physicians' practices, pharmacies, hospitals, care facilities and health insurers, as well as with European institutions.
Its portfolio spans several core national services: the Elektronische Patientenakte (ePA) for storing and exchanging patient data, the Elektronisches Rezept (e-prescription), the TI-Messenger for secure communication between health-care actors, DEMIS (the digital reporting and information system), DiGA (digital health applications), emergency data management (Notfalldaten) and GesundheitsID, an identity and access solution for the German health system. The technical work covers cloud-native architectures, software development, mobile applications, secure communication and interoperable medical data formats.
Engineering at gematik is shaped by standardisation, interoperability and security. The agency publishes numerous specifications, test tools and applications as open source and supports providers and users in implementing the resulting standards. Its stated focus is on transparency, security and user orientation, and it acts as a competence and coordination centre for the German health-care sector and its partners in Germany and Europe.
