Gigaton is a climate technology company that develops autonomous AI control and optimization systems for energy-intensive heavy industries, including cement, steel, glass and chemicals. Founded in 2020, the company was spun out of research at UCL and the University of Cambridge and operates from the United Kingdom. It raised $26 million in Series A funding.
Its product, Self-Learning Control, sits at the core of plant operations, applying AI to both the control and optimization layers. The system directly controls actuators, explains its actions to plant operators and adapts as plant conditions change. Reported results at customer sites include a 4% reduction in fuel cost index and a 33% reduction in C3S variability.
The company's technical work spans artificial intelligence, machine learning, autonomous control systems, control optimization, industrial process optimization and self-learning AI systems. Gigaton describes the work as one of the world's most challenging control and machine learning problems, with the stated aim of cutting gigatonnes of carbon emissions from the world's biggest emitting industries, which account for roughly 8 billion tons of carbon per year.
