H-E-B is a grocery and retail company founded in 1905 by Florence Butt in Kerrville, Texas. It operates more than 440 stores across Texas and Mexico and employs more than 175,000 people, whom the company calls Partners. Its operations combine store retail with e-commerce, curbside pickup, home delivery, pharmacies, food manufacturing and food distribution, giving technologists work spanning consumer-facing digital services, logistics and supply-chain systems, and in-store operations.
The company runs several store formats alongside its core H-E-B supermarkets, including the specialty grocer Central Market, the expanded H-E-B Plus! format, Mi Tienda, the value-oriented Joe V's Smart Shop, and the True Texas BBQ food-service format. H-E-B also operates stores in Mexico. Its stated industry verticals cover grocery retail, supermarkets, e-commerce, pharmacies, food manufacturing, food distribution and restaurant/BBQ food service.
H-E-B describes its guiding belief as "Each and Every Person Counts". Employees are treated as owners of the company, with an employee stock plan that lets Partners participate in ownership, and the firm emphasises inclusion, long-term relationships and practical service to customers. Community activity includes a Hunger Relief Program, Feast of Sharing, mobile kitchens and disaster-response efforts.
