The Inter-American Development Bank, founded in 1959, is the leading source of financing and knowledge for Latin America and the Caribbean. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., it operates across 48 member nations, including 26 borrowing countries in the region and 22 non-borrowing members from Asia, Europe, and North America.
The Bank operates through three distinct entities. The IDB itself provides sovereign-guaranteed project financing to the public sector, approving approximately $13 billion for 95 projects in 2024. IDB Invest directly supports private companies and mobilized $9.8 billion in financing that year. IDB Lab catalyses entrepreneurial innovation, approving $107 million across 72 innovation projects in 2024. Combined, the IDB Group deployed roughly $23 billion in financial support during 2024.
The Bank's work is guided by IDBStrategy+, its institutional framework for 2024–2030, which prioritises sustainable and inclusive development outcomes across the region. Its operations span development finance, public and private sector investment, institutional strategy, and regional policy guidance, positioning it as a comprehensive development ecosystem for Latin America and the Caribbean.
