Lewis Energy Group is a privately-owned natural gas producer founded in 1983 by Rodney Lewis, who began his career as a gauger in Webb and La Salle Counties, Texas in 1978. The company operates more than 1,800 natural gas wells across South Texas, producing over a billion cubic feet of gas per day. Lewis Energy pioneered development of the Eagle Ford shale play, drilling the first Eagle Ford-targeted well in 2002.
The company's technical operations span upstream exploration and production, well drilling and completion, and field development. Beyond its core South Texas operations, Lewis Energy expanded internationally in 2004 with the establishment of Lewis Energy Mexico, which operates under a public works contract with PEMEX covering approximately 100,000 acres. The company drilled the first Eagle Ford well in Mexico in 2010, discovering two new Eagle Ford fields in the process.
As a private enterprise, Lewis Energy has maintained operational continuity for over four decades, building its business from a single well acquired with a $13,000 loan into a substantial regional producer. The company manages lease and acreage operations alongside its drilling and production activities, positioning itself as a vertically-integrated operator focused on natural gas extraction in onshore formations.
