Magnendo is developing a magnetic robotic navigation system intended to help physicians reach the brain's tortuous blood vessels during endovascular procedures, including stroke and brain aneurysm treatment. The platform combines magnetically steerable soft-robotic guidewires with robotic controls, medical imaging and intelligent software. The stated aims are to shorten procedure times, reduce unsafe manoeuvres and widen access to these treatments. The company's first clinical system is in preparation.
The technical work spans magnetic robotics, soft robotics, magnetically steerable guidewires, robotic controls, medical imaging, intelligent software, neurovascular navigation, systems engineering and manufacturing. Much of the underlying research was carried out over several years at MIT, and the company retains strong ties to academic research.
Magnendo's team is multidisciplinary, covering robotics, software, systems, manufacturing and clinical disciplines. Staff have been drawn from MIT, Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital and Medtronic Surgical Robotics. The company operates in the neurovascular care, stroke treatment, brain aneurysm treatment, endovascular procedures, medical devices and robotic surgery fields.
