Machine Learning Applied Scientist, Part-Time AI Evaluation - Remote (United States)
Agency post: OpenTrain AI is a hiring intermediary and lists this role for a client.
• $60–$120 per hour equivalent, paid per accepted task
• 100% remote
• Part-time
• About 15 hours a week, you choose when
Work on the cutting edge of machine learning, on your own schedule, and get paid for the technical expertise you already have.
Machine learning systems learn from examples reviewed by applied scientists. The teams building them need applied scientists who can create realistic engineering tasks, judge whether a model's work is correct and efficient, write the implementation a strong practitioner would produce, and explain exactly where the result falls short. Your judgment helps shape the next generation of AI models and tools. This is remote, part-time contractor work applying your machine learning expertise to AI evaluation.
What you'll do
• Create realistic machine learning tasks involving model development, data pipelines, numerical methods and inference systems
• Review model implementations and training workflows for correctness, performance and reproducibility
• Write expert solutions in Python, including the model components, evaluation logic and command-line workflows needed to solve each task
• Investigate numerical failures and system-level failures, then explain clearly why an AI coding agent's result did not meet the requirements
Why this is worth your time
• Build practical AI evaluation skills while earning the equivalent of $60–$120 an hour reviewing machine learning engineering tasks
• Work hands-on with training pipelines, inference systems and coding agents, checking AI results for correctness and speed
• Build practical experience in AI model evaluation, from numerical debugging to memory and throughput tuning
• Fully remote and flexible, no fixed shifts, no commute
Who this is for
• A PhD or master's degree in a quantitative discipline such as computer science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, applied mathematics, statistics or engineering
• Strong machine learning experience from professional or research work, and practical proficiency with Python
• Fluent in English
• Helpful background includes familiarity with PyTorch, JAX, NumPy, SciPy, SGLang, vLLM, llama.cpp, tokenizers, or transformers, and work in a recognized technology, AI laboratory, research, or engineering environment (exceptional open-source or academic experience may also qualify); prior AI training work is not required.
Pay and details
• $60–$120 per hour equivalent, paid per accepted task, as an independent contractor
• Part-time, about 15 hours a week, you choose when; fully remote, United States
