Quartermaster AI builds systems for monitoring the world's oceans. The Arlington, Virginia-based company applies artificial intelligence, distributed sensors, and satellite technology to create a maritime awareness network. This network uses civilian and commercial fleets as a persistent sensing layer, generating real-time data on vessel locations, fleet movements, and maritime incidents for clients including navies, coast guards, and the maritime insurance and shipping sectors.
The company's core hardware product, SmartMast™, consists of sensors equipped on vessels to provide advanced sensing, HD video, and geolocation capabilities. These sensors feed data into the broader Maritime Awareness Network. The system is designed to identify and track vessels globally, including those operating without Automatic Identification System (AIS) transponders.
The network has achieved notable scale. More than 600 SmartMast sensors are deployed across over 25 countries. The equipped fleet has logged over 10 million miles of travel. To date, the system has identified over 400,000 vessels not broadcasting via AIS, demonstrating its capacity to enhance visibility across global shipping lanes.
