Southwest Power Pool (SPP) is a regional transmission organization (RTO) that manages the electric grid and wholesale power market across much of the central and western United States. Established in 1941, the nonprofit corporation operates under a mandate from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), serving all or part of 17 states across approximately 732,086 square miles on behalf of its 152 members.
The organization's technical work centers on grid management, wholesale market operations, and energy reliability. Its primary product, the Integrated Marketplace, includes day-ahead and real-time balancing markets, transmission congestion rights, and reliability unit commitment processes. The scale of these operations is significant: in 2025, SPP reported delivering over $4.6 billion in value to its members, with a benefit-to-cost ratio of 24-to-1.
SPP employs over 800 people and is headquartered in Little Rock, Arkansas. The company's engineering and technology teams work on problems in electric grid management, wholesale power market operations, energy management, and grid reliability, reflecting its role as critical infrastructure for the central U.S. power system.
