Starcloud

About

Founded in 2024 and headquartered in Redmond, Washington, Starcloud is developing data centres in orbit, aiming to supply AI compute infrastructure powered by continuous solar energy. The company has raised $200m to pursue space-based GPU clusters that it claims can cut electricity costs by 90% and reduce energy consumption by a factor of ten compared with terrestrial facilities, exploiting radiative cooling and uninterrupted sunlight.

In November 2025 the firm launched StarCloud-1, described as the world's first satellite carrying an NVIDIA H100 GPU. The mission successfully trained the first large language model in orbit, demonstrating what the company frames as a viable path to orbital compute at scale.

The technical team draws on experience from SpaceX, Airbus Defence and Space, Microsoft and leading universities, with co-founders holding advanced degrees from Wharton, Harvard and in materials engineering. The workforce includes personnel with more than 25 patents. Core engineering domains span space-based data centres, orbital compute clusters, space solar power and radiative cooling systems.
