The Clearing House is a banking association and payments company that operates core payments system infrastructure for the U.S. banking industry. Founded in 1853, it is one of the oldest private sector financial institutions in the country. The company's primary technical domains are payment processing, clearing and settlement, and real-time payments.
Its flagship product, CHIPS, is the largest private sector USD clearing and settlement network globally, processing $2.2 trillion in payments daily. It also operates RTP, a real-time payment system that enables instant payments around the clock for transactions up to $10 million. The company's systems handle nearly $2 trillion in daily U.S. dollar payment volume and account for half of all commercial ACH and wire volume in the United States.
Beyond its core infrastructure, The Clearing House engages with policymakers, conducts research, and offers expertise to guide the evolution of payments regulation and public policy.
