Founded during UNFCCC COP23 in 2017, the Blockchain & Climate Institute (BCI) emerged from a critical observation: the rapidly evolving landscape of digital technologies represented both an unprecedented opportunity and a complex challenge for global climate action. While blockchain, artificial intelligence, and digital innovations held transformative potential for climate governance, policymakers and technology developers were operating in parallel silos, unable to effectively bridge the gap between innovation and implementation. The founders recognized that without expert guidance at this intersection, the promise of emerging technologies would remain unfulfilled in the climate space.
Today, BCI operates as a globally recognised non-profit think tank and advocacy organization, uniquely positioned at the nexus of climate policy, digital infrastructure, and international standards. With a volunteer-led network spanning more than 30 countries, the Institute serves as the critical bridge between innovation and governance - addressing the disconnect where technology developers face policy-alignment challenges and policymakers encounter constraints in technical implementation. Through sustained engagement with UNFCCC bodies, ISO technical committees, and national governments, BCI ensures that emerging digital technologies are deployable, finance-ready, and aligned with international climate objectives. The Institute has supported over 70 national governments through capacity building programs, delivered 25+ climate innovation projects, and maintains liaison representations across multiple ISO technical committees, translating cutting-edge technology into measurable, accountable climate outcomes.
