Colorado PERA is Colorado's largest public pension plan, established in 1931 to provide retirement security and comprehensive benefits to public employees across the state. It serves more than 730,000 current and former public employees and over 500 government agencies and public entities, covering state government workers, public school teachers, university employees, judges, city and town employees, and State Troopers.
The organisation administers a pre-funded retirement system built on pension trust funds, financed by fixed-percentage contributions from both members and employers. Assets are invested under the direction of the Board of Trustees against actuarially established investment objectives, with long-term goals and policies set accordingly. For most of the public employees it covers, the plan serves as a substitute for Social Security.
Technical work at Colorado PERA spans actuarial science, pension fund investment management, and retirement benefits administration. The organisation operates under the authority of the Colorado General Assembly and states commitments to transparency, good governance, long-term sustainability, and delivering quality service to a diverse membership.
