CoverMyMeds operates an electronic prior authorization platform that automates workflows between healthcare providers, pharmacies, and payers. Founded in 2008 by a pharmacist and software developer, the company addressed a longstanding inefficiency: traditional prior authorization required numerous phone calls and faxes, delaying patient access to medications. The ePA platform streamlines these communications and reduces administrative burden across the healthcare system.
The platform has achieved substantial scale. It integrates with 75% of electronic health record systems, connects to over 50,000 pharmacies, and is used by more than 950,000 healthcare providers. CoverMyMeds works with most major health plans and pharmacy benefit managers. In June 2025, the company acquired RxLightning to expand its capabilities in specialty medication access. CoverMyMeds now operates as a wholly owned subsidiary of McKesson Corporation.
The technical infrastructure supports APIs and integrations across EHR systems, pharmacy networks, and payer systems. The platform processes prior authorizations at scale, helping reduce prescription abandonment and accelerate the time from prescription to patient therapy.
