We're a nonprofit organization dedicated to steering transformative technology toward benefiting life and away from extreme, large-scale risks. Our team of 20+ staff members operates across the US and Europe, bringing together expertise from machine learning, policy, medicine, and governance institutions. We focus on the technologies that could fundamentally reshape our future - primarily artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and nuclear weapons.
Our work spans several key areas: policy development and advocacy to bridge the gap between technical experts and public institutions, grantmaking to support critical research, outreach and education to help people understand these challenges, and institution-building to improve how we govern powerful technologies. We've convened major conferences like the Puerto Rico AI Conference and Asilomar, launched influential initiatives like the Asilomar AI Principles, and produced viral films like 'Slaughterbots' to raise awareness about autonomous weapons. We believe that technology should serve humanity, not the other way around.
