Mill is a waste prevention technology company founded in 2020 by Matt Rogers and Harry Tannenbaum, former Nest employees who built the Nest Learning Thermostat. The company has built a system to prevent food waste, starting with an innovative kitchen appliance and extending into commercial food waste management.
The company's engineering work spans artificial intelligence, advanced sensors, over-the-air software updates, drying and dehydration technology and smart home appliance design. Its product philosophy emphasises effortless, habit-forming consumer technology that gets smarter over time through software updates delivered to devices in the field.
The Mill Food Recycler is an odourless kitchen appliance that automatically dries, shrinks and de-stinks food scraps - from avocado pits to turkey bones - overnight, reducing food scrap volume by up to 80% and transforming the residue into nutrient-rich Food Grounds. Millions of pounds of food have been diverted from landfills through the system. Mill was named Most Innovative Company by Fast Company in 2024.
Beyond the consumer appliance, Mill is expanding into commercial food waste management through partnerships with Whole Foods Market and Compass Group, spanning grocery and retail as well as food service and catering. The company describes a mission-driven culture focused on encouraging new habits at home that are good for people and the planet.
