Pinterest operates a visual discovery platform on which users search, save and shop ideas spanning home décor, fashion, recipes and travel. Founded in San Francisco in 2009 by Ben Silbermann, Paul Sciarra and Evan Sharp, the company went public in April 2019 and reports nearly 500 million monthly users worldwide.
The engineering work is concentrated in several distinct areas: visual search and visual discovery, recommendation systems, e-commerce and shopping technology, and digital content curation. The product surface - a digital mood board that turns saved images into shoppable, discoverable material - places image understanding and ranking systems at the centre of the technical stack.
Pinterest has offices in San Francisco, New York, London, Dublin, Tokyo, São Paulo and Singapore, serving users across North America, Europe, Latin America and Asia Pacific. Bill Ready, previously President of Commerce at Google, became chief executive in 2022, with co-founder Ben Silbermann taking the role of executive chairman.
The company describes its mission as bringing everyone the inspiration to create a life they love. Work is organised around PinFlex, a model that allows staff to work from home or collaborate in person where that drives greater impact.
