In 2020, Sal Khan founded Schoolhouse with a simple yet powerful idea born during the pandemic: students can support one another in profound ways when given the opportunity. What began as a small pilot has grown into the world's largest platform for free, live, peer-to-peer tutoring, reaching over 174,000 students across more than 180 countries. Today, Schoolhouse facilitates over 460,000 tutoring sessions, all powered by student volunteers who are peers, not professionals - creating an approachable learning environment built on trust and genuine human connection.
At Schoolhouse, we believe that while technology continues to shape education, students still need something deeply human: encouragement, conversation, and a sense of belonging. Our community values - think big, start small; uplift each other; step in; always be a learner - guide everything we do. Students join for the tutoring but stay for the real connections they make. Whether it's preparing for the SAT with a peer who recently scored a 780, participating in one-on-one Dialogues about meaningful topics, or receiving homework help, every interaction reinforces our mission to unlock every student's potential through free, peer-powered learning.
