We're a nonprofit organization that started with a simple observation from our founder's time in the classroom. Michelle Brown taught in schools where she had to create her own materials, and then in schools with high-quality resources ready to use. That experience made it clear: the right tools can transform teaching, and every school deserves access to them. So we built CommonLit to be that resource for educators everywhere.
Today, we provide a comprehensive literacy program that includes a full-year ELA curriculum, benchmark assessments, and ongoing professional development. We've grown from those first 30 lessons published in 2013 to reaching over 30 million teachers and students globally. What drives us isn't growth metrics - it's knowing that when teachers have effective, research-backed materials and real support, they can create classrooms where learning is joyful and teaching is sustainable. We're proud to be an ESSA-certified program, but we're even prouder when we hear from schools about the real difference our resources make for students who need them most.
